Initially we require the following:

A query letter, being a covering letter from yourself which includes a brief summary of your book, and also gives some information about yourself which could be relevant to the book. If the work is non-fiction, the table of contents should be included.

If the manuscript is already prepared,  send part of it to us (or the whole, if you feel you must) via email with a note indicating which chapters you feel are representative of your writing and the style of the book.

The format should be:

• MS Word document, saved as a doc. file.
• Type should be double spaced, with font size at least 12 point.
• Pages should be numbered.

We prefer to receive a query letter and sample from the manuscript. If you believe it absolutely essential that you submit the full manuscript, do so, but on the understanding that we take no responsibility for the loss or damage of material submitted. Anything you send must be replaceable.

We will respond to you as soon as is feasible according to our schedule, which should not be more than one month, letting you know how we think we should proceed.

The following is essential to note, please! Be prepared for the critique we offer. Authors generally have a very close relationship with their work, with the characters they have created, and can be very protective towards them. If you have reached the stage of submitting a work for review, please be ready for what you might hear.

There are many different aspects to editing, from the nitpicking details of punctuation and other format issues, through to plot, strategy, style, consistency, point of view, character development and so on. The editors involved in your work will have a mixture of opinions to offer as well as advice on simple (and complex) mistakes that might have occurred.

The services Artist Universe provide vary according to the needs of your work. These we will discuss with you at each stage of the way. Depending on the extent of input required, we will constantly evaluate whether and how to continue with the relationship. It is at these stages that contractual obligations are formulated.

Note that we do not do major rewriting. It is, after all, your work and needs to remain such. We will help, via these processes, to provide an informed outsider’s view on your work.
